"I chose to apply for Tesco as they were, and still are, the number one retailer in the UK."

Our purpose is to create value for customers and earn their loyalty. We do this through our values and conduct – the way we choose to work and what we believe. Our values can be expressed in two phrases: 'no-one tries harder for customers' and 'treat people how we like to be treated'.
How do we deliver on these values? Through three little words: Every Little Helps. The thing is, we used to be a business that did things very well. But we wanted to do a lot more for our customers. So we did quite something unusual for the time. We asked them what they wanted.
They reminded us of a small, simple truth. Nobody loves doing the shopping (not the “we've run out of loo roll” kind, anyway). So we thought maybe it would help if we were to make shopping a little… nicer.
Every Little Helps was born, and it came out in all sorts of ways. To help mums, we built nappy changing zones. To help reduce queues, we packed your bags. And if someone wanted a bigger melon, we let them help themselves. And as part of Every Little Helps, we made promises:
Pure and simple. And that's probably why it worked and still does. Today, it reminds all of us why we're here and what we're hoping to achieve.
We're a commercial business and we aim to be highly successful. But, there's no conflict between that and Every Little Helps. Because by looking after our customers and making their lives a bit easier, we've grown and grown. And Every Little Helps applies just as much to staff at Tesco. We've made promises to them. About being respected. About being helped at work. About having the chance to get on. And about doing something interesting and being able to use your initiative and your creative side. We want you to be happy. Because if we're not looking after you, who's looking after our customers?
