Human Resources

Applications for the Human Resources graduate programme are now closed.

Within Tesco the Human Resources function is known as Personnel. In our teams our graduates develop at the heart of the operation. There are 3 key teams within this function who ensure managers across the business have the world-class skills and tools to meet the needs of our people – and ultimately our customers. And when you have over 360,000 people around the world, there’s plenty of scope for influencing the business. That’s why we shape business processes around talent, performance management and learning.

Join us and you’ll enjoy the chance to cover a range of general business needs in specialist areas such as Reward & Policy, International Personnel, or Personnel Operations supporting a specific business area.

There’s a broad variety of projects you could be involved in – from the annual pay review, or salary benchmarking with external companies, to designing an induction pack for new starters.

Central Personnel provides support to help our colleagues deliver our People Promises consistently across the Tesco Group by:

  • Finding best practice both internally and externally to design the Tesco Way processes
  • Reporting data to the UK and International ‘People Matters’ groups to help understand trends and opportunities across our UK and International businesses
  • Building leadership capability in Personnel colleagues and Directors
  • Providing consultancy support for key change programmes across countries and functions

In Central Personnel we design the products and services that make working at Tesco so rewarding. This incorporates four key areas. The Talent team creates processes to ensure we spot and develop talent in Tesco, and that we support people to develop their careers. The Organisational Design team ensures we have the right team structures so we can deliver for customers and create fulfilling jobs for our people. The Reward & Policy team establishes a framework for business areas and countries to work to and the Leadership Academy team creates innovative leadership and management development solutions.

International Personnel are the team who champion and are the guardians for the delivery of the People Promises and Values in each country and ensure we create the right culture to deliver these. And to develop the leadership at all levels in the organisation. The key accountabilities are:

  • Resourcing And Talent Planning
  • Leadership And Capability
  • Policy And Process
  • Leadership

In Personnel Operations you’ll join a team supporting a specific key business area, such as Tesco.com, Finance or Commercial. This generalist role involves advising and guiding line managers on all people issues and helping them to understand and implement Personnel policies. It’s a high profile role, ensuring the business drives our people objectives and helping managers to lead their teams effectively.

Training and Development

Naturally, we’ll make sure that you get relevant training in specific skills, like shaping Personnel policy or writing training and development plans. We’ll also help you to hone the core skills you’ll need, such as communication, report writing, analysis, decision-making, influencing, making presentations and running meetings.

We’re committed to your professional development, so we’ll support you as you work towards a CIPD qualification. This will include time for study leave and support throughout project work.

By the end of the programme, you’ll have a good idea of the area you want to work in and the skills and experience to develop a rewarding career at Tesco. Within five years you could be leading a major business-wide project, managing your own Personnel team, or running international development programmes. The scope is there to develop in any way you want.

To succeed in Human Resources, you’ll need:
