At Tesco we call our Supply Chain function Store Ordering. Our core purpose is to deliver continuous improvements in:

  • Availability for our customers
  • Reducing stock holding in depots and stores
  • Reducing waste in stores

Based in Cheshunt and Welwyn Garden City, Store Ordering has three key departments:

  1. Food Supply manage and optimise the supplier to depot ordering process, including promotions, events and new store openings
  2. Replenishment manages the processes involving products in store. From the warehouse to the shelf, this includes replenishment operations, waste routines and maintaining stock record accuracy
  3. Systems Development works with the ordering system to improve our ordering processes to deliver our core purpose and improve the customer experience

The three departments interact extensively with other areas of the business, including Stores, Commercial, Distribution, IT, UK & Ireland Support Office, as well as our Suppliers.

What will I be doing?

After initial training, you will be given immediate responsibility to deliver consecutive 13-week projects in each department. All three placements will test your leadership skills. You will also need to be a great communicator and show you are able to manage projects effectively. Many of our projects require an analytical approach, so you will learn to manage and work with large volumes of data. These skills will help you add real value to the business. Your work will be immediately visible in our stores.

The projects vary greatly dependent upon the department. Recently, graduates have been tasked with helping to align our Ireland operation to the UK in Food Supply, creating new and more efficient ways of working on Non-Food for our stores in Replenishment, and improving evening availability for Fresh food lines during peak trading in Systems Development. All projects will involve visiting stores, depots or suppliers across the UK – and will ultimately be driven by you.

The Programme runs annually from September. After induction and business familiarisation, which includes hands on experience in store & depot, as well as systems training, you will be placed on your first project:

During the year you will have a great support network. You will have a dedicated buddy, who has recently completed the programme. You will also have a mentor who will be a senior manager within the function. This is complimented by a variety of development opportunities and behavioural training courses that will help you excel at Tesco.

Where could it take me?

After you successfully complete the programme, you will be assigned a role in one of Store Ordering's three departments. The position will give you responsibility for performing an important role within the function, taking ownership of projects, processes or teams of people.

There are many opportunities to progress at Tesco as the business is continually expanding both in the UK and internationally. Graduates have the potential to deliver high profile and tangible change to Tesco. You will have the opportunity to progress to Senior Management as quickly as your development will allow.

What skills do I need?

To be successful in Store Ordering, you'll have:

  • A highly effective analytical and decision making ability
  • Great communication skills
  • The ability to champion and action change
  • The personality to win the hearts and minds of those around you
  • A strong passion for delivering a great shopping trip – as part of our 'Every Little Helps' customer promise
