Tesco.com is the online version of Tesco, the world's third biggest retailer. Launched in 2000, Tesco.com offers weekly groceries online and much more. There's Tesco Direct, a clothing website and Tesco services, like Tesco Bank and Tesco Telecoms.

When Tesco.com arrived in 2000, it wasn't much more than a few computers in one little office. Today, there are almost 23,000 people behind Tesco.com - and turnover exceeds £2 billion. And there's more coming soon.

Tesco.com is broad: there's Operations, Marketing, IT, Business Development, and Customer Services just for starters. What's more, we work in locations around the world.

So, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and want to move to the fore of an exciting growth area, you'll click with the Tesco.com Graduate Programme.

What will I be doing?

Your 12-month rotational programme will run from September 2012. After an induction, there's a head-office placement. You spend time in core business areas, like Marketing, Operations Development and IT, and you'll be working on real projects that really make a difference.

You'll also get hands-on experience in our shops and distribution centres, plus an opportunity for an international experience thanks to our office in Bangalore.

You'll receive management and leadership skills training throughout the year to allow you to develop, and get your career moving.

Yes, IT is a big part of it, but there's more to Tesco.com. Think about:

  • The Tesco.com Marketing team. They're hard at work researching what customers think, so they can improve their shopping experience. They're designing the communications that our customers see on the website, on the mobile app and in shops. They also put together a trade plan of promotions and events.
  • Our various Operations Development teams - who initiate, develop and see-in change to continually improve the shopping trip for our online and digital customers. This involves managing a whole range of projects through from conception to delivery and covers our grocery, direct and international businesses.
  • Other support areas - for example, Commercial Planning and Change, Fraud Prevention, Media Publishing, Finance, Personnel and many more...
  • And of course, our Information Technology team - who are at the technological frontier, developing and operating leading IT and digital solutions to provide the best possible shopping trip for our customers.

Throughout your graduate year you'll receive support from a buddy who's been in your position and mentoring from one of the Tesco.com directors to accelerate your career and build you networks.

Tesco.com programme progression

Where could it take me?

If you make it through the Graduate Programme, you'll be promoted to a permanent role in one of our teams. We'll track you on a development programme to ensure you receive opportunities, training and support. This position will give you responsibility: you'll manage projects or processes at Tesco.com and across the business.

What skills do I need?

To be successful working for Tesco.com you'll need to have:

  • Commercial awareness
  • Team skills
  • Analytical skills
  • The ability to influence, plan and prioritise
  • Strong numerical, analytical and conceptual-thinking skills
  • Entrepreneurial spirit
  • A can-do attitude - Tesco.com is all about getting things done, and sometimes the near impossible really can be achieved. You'll need drive and tenacity. Sometimes you'll need to convince sceptical colleagues that change really is a good idea.
  • Adaptability - Tesco.com is a very fast-paced, dynamic company, so the ability to adapt rapidly to change is vital.
  • Creativity - The world of online retail is always changing, and we're continually on the lookout for new ways to expand the online shopping experience, improve our results and out-do our competitors. The ability to come up with new ideas is therefore a must.
  • Problem solving - this could well become part of your daily workload, especially in areas such as our International division, where you'll not only need the flexibility to work abroad but also the ability to grapple with complex problems in the context of different cultures.
  • Team working - we only have one team, the Tesco Team. Whatever your role, the ability to play your part and create a network of contacts is essential.
  • Commitment to the Customer - our vision is to provide the best possible service to our customers. You may not think it if you work in an area like IT, but every single job in Tesco.com, whether directly or indirectly, is designed to improve the online shopping experience, so customers remain loyal and keep coming back for more.
