What is Treasury?

Tesco means big numbers! With a turnover of £62.5 billion across 14 countries, we're the largest e-grocer and most profitable e-retail business in the world.

In short, Tesco's Treasury department manages liquidity for the Tesco Group, ensuring that the right money is in the right place in the right currency at the right time. Treasury reduces cash fluctuations from interest rate and foreign exchange movements through the use of hedging. Hedging 'locks down' foreign exchange rates for future purchases to reduce adverse risk from foreign exchange fluctuations in the financial statements.

There are various departments within Treasury:

  • Front Office: Responsible for daily cash management and dealing in the market.
  • Middle Office: Responsible for responsible for all treasury related management and financial reporting.
  • Back Office: Responsible for the confirmation and settlement of all Treasury trades.
  • Corporate Finance: Responsible for raising bonds and managing property transactions which occur in the market including the sale and leaseback of land to release cash to be used to invest in future growth.
  • Financial Planning and Analysis: Responsible for understanding the market changes, the impacts of those changes and strategies required to minimise risk and identify opportunities in the markets.

What will I be doing?

The first placement will be within the Treasury control team where the candidate will have exposure to all aspects of a Treasury back office function including but not limited to; Securities, cash settlements, cash reconciliations, trade confirmations and various management reporting. After successful completion of the first 12 month placement and completion of the first 2 stages of the AMCT qualification the candidate will then move into their second role within Treasury.

The Treasury graduate scheme will run parallel to the Finance graduate scheme and you will have a Finance manager as a mentor as well as support from a buddy who will help you to settle into your new role. You will have access to a wide rage of courses on the programme from how to deliver effective presentations to managing meetings. Like everything at Tesco they are designed to make you make the most out of your potential.

Tesco now operates in 14 countries worldwide and given that we are an international company we expect our graduates to be internationally mobile.

The Treasury graduate programme is designed to deliver the next generation of Tesco leaders. The aim is to promote the graduates within 3 years after completing their AMCT qualification.

  • Be able to work efficiently within a team as well as on their own when required.
