Pete’s career shows just how far a humble graduate can go in Tesco.com. The answer, in his case, is several thousand miles.
He graduated in International Marketing and Business Management from the University of Gloucestershire. On completing his degree, he joined the Dotcom graduate scheme, despite being offered a marketing role at Boots, which he had held for a year as part of his degree. He was impressed with Tesco.com not only by the competitive salary and what he calls the “fast moving, start up culture of the company”, but also by the fact that he would be able to spend time in several different areas, before choosing one in which to specialise.
Pete initially spent several weeks in a Tesco store, before completing placements in online advertising and Tesco Direct, which was then about to launch. However, it was in Operations Development where he found his niche, examining the possibility of delivering groceries without bags. Pete ended up staying for two years, looking after the roll-out of bagless deliveries, improving the accuracy and productivity of picking and working on a whole range of other projects. He is particularly proud, however, of allowing products to be picked from promotional ends in stores, something he had previously been told by everyone would be impossible.
Pete was, however, very keen to work abroad, and, when an international director was appointed, jumped at the opportunity. He is now bringing his expertise in operations development to the Dotcom section in South Korea. Here he has already helped improve customer service and productivity by bringing systems and processes into line with those in the UK.
Pete thinks two of the best things about Tesco.com are the ability to get on within the company, and the high level of training which has enabled him to do it. In Dotcom, he feels, it’s important to get things done quickly, something Pete feels passionately himself. Pete has this advice for anyone thinking of working for Dotcom:
“If you’re somebody who’s very keen to get on, and are willing to put time and effort into that by developing yourself, then Tesco.com is a place where you can do it.”
