Put simply: a wide and varied amount. You'll be given the opportunity to undertake a wide selection of projects within the property department, working in one of the teams detailed in the section below. But don't worry; you'll get support every step of the way. You'll be based at our Welwyn Garden City office with additional travel in some cases to visit project sites around the UK.
Our Property Development team deliver world-class stores for our customers & colleagues by leading cross functional teams of key stakeholders from a wide range of departments such as Commercial, Retail, Marketing and Operations. The key challenge is to use available insight to develop and deliver the right store proposition strategy for each local area, and then deliver this on time, within budget and to the highest possible quality standards.
As a graduate you'll be involved in a variety of exciting projects ranging from new build construction projects, refurbishments, store extensions, on & off site store replacement projects, distribution centre and dotcom only builds.
You will have real responsibility and accountability from day one and you'll be leading both internal & external stakeholders including main contractors, architects, retail designers and quantity surveyors. You will act as a project manager to ensure things are delivered on time and within the specified budgets and you will be expected to find innovative solutions for a variety of challenges both on and off site.
The Engineering & Environmental teamare responsible for the world-class design and implementation of Tesco's industry-leading engineering technologies. They lead the evaluation and development of new low and zero carbon initiatives, renewable technologies and sustainability solutions, before rolling out these projects into our stores, distribution and office facilities. The Engineering & Environmental team manages the Tesco CO2 plan and provides valuable insight which helps us to make decisions that balance both commercial and environmental factors.
During your time on the programme you'll have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of projects. These could range from developing a process that supports whole life costing of new and old equipment to evaluating and implementing energy saving initiatives within stores. Or you could take part in a design project with a Tesco contractor to develop a CO2 refrigeration system, or an initiative to measure the impact of energy-saving projects.
You'll have the opportunity to be involved in projects ranging from investigation and development of renewable energy technologies, to the trialing of alternative, low carbon building materials. You'll be engaging with internal and external stakeholders and will be managing technology and sustainability projects to help us meet our energy reduction and renewables targets.
Our Programme team is responsible for influencing business decisions through recommending strategy and enabling everything Property does, from recommending the best locations for new stores (site research) through to building & refitting stores. As a graduate, you will develop a broad network through working alongside a wide variety of functions to ensure we deliver our business targets. Previous Programme team graduates have had the opportunity to manage both our New Space & Refresh development programmes, and work on everything from Express to Mixed Use formats.
Cost Management – this team ensure that the department's multi million pound budget is spent wisely and delivers outstanding value for our customers so they keep coming back to shop with us. They manage the building costs to help influence what we build and importantly what we pay for all types of projects whether that's constructing new stores, refurbishments of existing stores or distribution centres.
As a graduate Cost Manager you would be accountable for the accuracy and cost efficiency of all projects before, during and after the construction process – in short, you'll have real accountability for the projects you touch. By focusing on keeping down the building costs of our projects, the Cost Management team can therefore help deliver great stores that cost less and pass that saving onto customers.
You will start the Programme by working with Cost Managers in the UK as well as communicating with our teams in India, building the skills needed to deliver great developments for customers and store colleagues that meet the growth plans of the wider business.
When a customer enters a store to do their shopping, they are looking for an enjoyable experience as well as getting good quality products. This experience is maximised by the Retail Planning team who ensure our stores are quick and simple to navigate, easy to walk around as well as bright and engaging.
As a Retail Planning graduate you will project manage the design and planning of new and existing Tesco stores to deliver the best shops for our customers. This design stretches from the physical plan/blueprint of the building through to a merchandise plan which dictates how the products flow logically across the store.
You will work with a variety of teams including architects, structural engineers, cost managers, development managers and Store Managers and Directors and use sales data, customer feedback and local demographics to support your decisions and ensure the store caters for the customers using it. This programme offers you the opportunity to take full accountability for projects from the outset and to make a real difference to our stores - both in the present and in the future.
Our Design & Formats team focuses on the internal design of our stores, the store branding and “look and feel” to make sure the customers' shopping experience is the very best it can be. You could be reviewing the latest in fixture and fittings trends through to reviewing what our competitors' latest design initiatives are. We link with many other departments within Tesco and in a typical week you might visit a new store that is still being constructed or work with creative design studios in London on our stores of the future. You will be expected to find solutions for a variety of challenges linked to different store sizes or building shapes that deliver world-class designs for our customers.
In this team you will manage the design process; taking projects from brief to trial and then to rollout across the estate. This can be everything from the layout of the store, the redesign of a shelf and the colours of the walls through to designing brand new concept stores and departments. Using your creative knowledge, commercial and brand awareness, you will be working closely with manufacturing suppliers and creative design agencies to deliver the best store environment for our customers.
During the 12 month programme you will gain hands-on experience and high-calibre training. There'll be plenty of variety to your role, and you'll have a wide range of opportunities to go any direction you choose. By the end of this programme you'll have gained the confidence to take on your first management position and genuinely deliver a project that makes a difference to our customers and store colleagues.
Alongside gaining experience and a track record of delivering, you'll also get to spend time in a store for a real insight into how your office based decisions may affect the core of our business. It's safe to say that you'll have the opportunities to make your mark in Property and the wider business!
